The Sunbeam Tiger was born out of the Rootes Group's desire to create a more powerful sports car. After unsuccessful talks with Ferrari, Ian Garrad, a Southern California Sunbeam-Talbot sales manager, teamed up with Carroll Shelby to develop a prototype. The result was the Sunbeam Tiger, a "baby Cobra" powered by a Ford 260ci V8. The Mark IA, an improved version of the original, was produced from August 1965 through February 1966, with only 2,706 units built.
This stunning 1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk1A is finished in correct Carnival Red (code 39) over a textured black vinyl interior. Under the hood lies the original, numbers-matching 260ci V8 engine, mated to a top-loader 4-speed manual transmission and a 2.88 rear end. Features include chrome 13-inch Cragar SS wheels with BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires, a burled walnut dash, a wood 3-spoke steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift handle, Jaegar instrumentation, a locking center console, Girling power front disc brakes, dual Talbot-style rearview mirrors, a windshield washer, a soft boot cover, and an auxiliary hardtop.
This Tiger spent most of its early life in California before moving to the East Coast in 2011. It was authenticated by the Sunbeam Tiger Owner's Association (STOA) in 2012 and now bears the coveted STOA sticker under the dash, along with its matching Certificate of Authenticity #955. The car underwent a cosmetic restoration in the 1990s, including a color change to burgundy metallic. Upon its arrival at the St. Louis Car Museum, it was decided to restore the car to its original factory specifications.
