The Cougar was introduced to the market in 1967 as an upscaled counterpart to the Ford Mustang, and the XR-7 package elevated the combination of luxury and muscle even further. It features a unique horizontal taillight design with sequential turn signals, hidden quad headlamps, and additional chrome trim. Mercury targeted a more refined audience with its elegant styling and standard equipment while staying true to its performance roots by offering only V8 engines for the Cougar series, creating a car that balanced style and power. In 1970, the first generation of Cougars concluded with a strong finish, featuring updates such as a new front bumper, fenders, and nose.
This 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible represents one of only 1,997 XR7 Convertibles produced in 1970. Under the hood lies its original 351ci Windsor V8, producing 250 horsepower and 355 ft-lbs of torque, paired with the reliable FMX Select-Shift 3-speed Automatic Transmission and a 9-inch rear end with a 3.00:1 gear ratio. The Cougar is finished in its original code-correct combination of Competition Blue exterior with a White Vinyl high-back bucket seat interior accented with leather and a matching white convertible top. It's one of only 22 XR-7 Convertibles with this color and trim combination.
The XR-7 comes equipped with factory options including cold air conditioning, power steering, power front disc brakes, power folding top, sports console shifter, tinted glass, and more. Upgrades include 15" chrome Magnum 500 rally wheels with raised white letter radial tires, a Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette player, and unique front brake air cooling ducts added by a previous owner. Recent maintenance includes replacement of the high beam bulbs, oil pressure switch, and installation of a new air filter.
