Leading into its third year of sales, the GTO continued to soar in popularity. As a result, GM gave the GTO its own model line in 1966, moving it away from being a performance package option for the LeMans series. This year also marked the end of the 389ci V8, as Pontiac was already developing a new engine for the 1967 model year. Additionally, 1966 was the last year the GTO was available with a tri-power carburetion option. The stacked headlights, aggressive grille, and louvered taillights made these cars as iconic as they were sinister, cementing their place in muscle car history.

According to documentation, this GTO convertible sold new in early spring 1966 and remained with its original owner until May 1986. It was then acquired by its second owner, who added it to his curated muscle car collection. The car was repainted from Martinique Bronze to its current Candlelite Cream to match his other 1966 GTO models, and a new convertible top was installed. The interior appears to be original and remains in excellent condition for its age. The factory 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission was replaced with a 1969 date-coded 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic for better cruising performance.
